Introducing the material

A powerful plant, distilled to reveal what exists beneath the power.

Artemisia herba-alba grows around Jebel Bargou among dry limestone mountains, rocky slopes and open Mediterranean vegetation.

It arrives with authority. Bitter, herbal and intensely aromatic, White Wormwood can initially seem almost uncompromising. Underneath that force are cooler green tones, dry wood, warm herbs and an almost mineral austerity.

The objective is not maximum intensity, but finding a more nuanced expression of a plant that already knows how to shout.

The opening

Dry, bitter-green and immediately aromatic. There is a cool medicinal quality at first, with a sharp herbal edge and a sense of crushed wild vegetation.

The development

The initial force gradually spreads out. Warmer herbs, dusty stems, dry vegetation and subtle woody facets emerge, making the material feel broader and less severe.

The drydown

Long, dry and quietly woody-herbal. The bitterness becomes softer, leaving warmth, dryness and a slightly mineral aromatic trace.

The material in composition

Tension that is so beautiful.

White Wormwood can cut through sweetness, interrupt a polished floral or add wildness to woods and resins. Very small amounts can alter the temperature and texture of a formula.

It is useful precisely because it is not neutral. It can make something feel drier, rougher, stranger or more alive.

The origin of the material

From an inland limestone landscape.

Jebel Bargou sits within the wider Siliana–Oueslatia–Kairouan landscape and reaches approximately 1,266 metres.

Fresh flowers and leaves are harvested wild. The distillation recipe is developed around capturing complexity rather than simply maximising extraction.

With such an assertive Artemisia, the challenge is deciding how much power the material needs before its quieter facets disappear.
