Introducing the material

Mint, once the obvious freshness has been stripped away.

Horsemint is immediately recognisable as part of the mint family, but it is less polished and less confectionary than many familiar mint oils.

This wild Mentha longifolia is gathered around Aïn Draham and dried before distillation. Drying pulls the material away from juicy green freshness and toward crushed herbs, stems and warmer aromatic facets.

The result still has the cooling movement we associate with mint, but feels much closer to the wild plant itself.

The opening

Cool, green and herbal, but without the extreme icy sensation associated with peppermint. The freshness feels leafy rather than crystalline.

The development

The mint slowly gives way to dried herbs, stems and subtle earthy warmth. The material becomes increasingly aromatic and less obviously minty.

The drydown

Dry, herbaceous and persistent, with only a trace of cooling freshness remaining above a warmer botanical base.

The material in composition

Freshness without the obvious mint effect.

Horsemint can give movement to aromatic formulas while retaining natural texture. It works particularly well when freshness needs to coexist with woods, earthy notes or other herbs.

Instead of placing coldness on top of a composition, it can thread freshness through it.

The origin of the material

Wild mint from Tunisia’s greener northwest.

Aïn Draham lies in Jendouba in northwestern Tunisia, a greener, cooler and more humid region than the inland landscapes around Jebel Bargou.

The flowers and leaves are gathered wild and then dried. Removing water and allowing the plant to change shifts the balance of what eventually reaches the still.

The contrast between environment, drying and extraction gives Horsemint its particular combination of freshness and aromatic depth.
