Dry Spearmint POM

Introducing the material

A familiar mint allowed to become something less familiar.

Spearmint carries enormous olfactory recognition. Its bright, slightly sweet freshness can be identified almost instantly.

Here, cultivated Mentha spicata from Zaghouan is dried before distillation. The juicy, almost candy-like side becomes quieter while leaf, dry herbs and warmer botanical facets gain space.

The transformation is subtle enough that the material remains unmistakably spearmint, but substantial enough to move it beyond the conventional idea of mint oil.

The opening

Bright spearmint freshness with a soft natural sweetness and crisp leafy lift.

The development

The sweetness gradually retreats. Dried leaves, herbs and green stems come forward, making the oil increasingly botanical and less confectionary.

The drydown

Softly minty, dry and warm, with a persistent herbal character underneath the remaining freshness.

The material in composition

Familiarity can be useful.

Dry Spearmint can brighten aromatic formulas without producing the aggressive cooling effect of some mint materials. Its dryness also helps it sit naturally beside woods, grasses, herbs and earthy structures.

The herbaceous facets allow its freshness to reach deeper into a composition.

The origin of the material

Cultivated in Zaghouan, transformed through drying.

The plant is cultivated around Zaghouan and harvested as flowers and leaves. Unlike a fresh mint distillation, it is allowed to dry first.

This makes the material a useful example of how processing begins before steam enters the still. The same species can move between juicy, green, sweet, dry and herbal depending on how the botanical is handled.
